To legally drive a vehicle, it must be registered. A registered vehicle must have up-to-date road tax, valid insurance, and a valid vehicle inspection certificate (ITV). From a registered status, it is possible to request temporary or permanent deregistration of a vehicle depending on the circumstances.

There are procedures that allow you to carry out at the traffic offices both the temporary or permanent deregistration of a vehicle, as well as returning it to the active status from a temporary or permanent deregistration status.

Furthermore, to make these procedures easier for you, our online assistant is available to guide you through the different scenarios depending on the type of procedure you need to carry out.

When you request a temporary deregistration or an extension thereof , the deregistered vehicle will not be allowed to be driven. The temporary deregistration status can be reversed, returning the vehicle to a registered status, or it can be permanently deregistered, at any time.

This type of deregistration is temporary, with a maximum duration of one year (this limitation does not apply to agricultural vehicles, which have no such limitation). Before the deregistration period ends,  an extension can be requested for another year , with no limit on the number of extensions that can be obtained. Upon expiration of the temporary deregistration period, the vehicle will automatically revert to its registered status, with all the corresponding implications.

The reasons that may lead to requesting temporary deregistration of a vehicle can be several: Voluntary, due to theft.

  • Voluntary temporary deregistration :  If for any reason you are not going to drive your vehicle for a while, you can request to have it temporarily deregistered.
  • Temporary deregistration due to theft : In cases where a vehicle has been stolen, you must file a report with the State Security Forces. They will automatically notify us of the temporary deregistration due to theft from the moment the report is filed. In this case, the temporary deregistration is not limited to a maximum duration of one year, which is renewable. Similarly, once the vehicle is recovered, it will be re-registered.

In any case, you may need the temporary deregistration certificate issued by the DGT to present to your insurance company.

Remember that any vehicle parked on public roads must have valid insurance and vehicle inspection certificate (ITV), so if you are going to temporarily deregister a vehicle, you must store it on private property.

Deregistration is a necessary procedure to voluntarily remove a vehicle from circulation when it reaches the end of its useful life, for cases of transfer to another country or for vehicles intended for collections or museums.
